Information on the action project „Citizen” implemented by Education Development centre

The seminar of the cooperation schools of the Education Development centre (EDC) will take place on April 17, 2008, at Sigulda, hotel „Sigulda”, Pils iela 6. It is devoted to the presentation of the results of the action project “Citizen”implemented in academic year 2007/2008. Among the participants will be students and their teachers from 12 schools from all over Latvia as well as specialists on civic education from Latvia and USA. The time schedule of the seminar is from 10.00 till 15.30.

The project “Citizen” has been known in schools of Latvia since 1998. The methodology of the project is offered by the international Civic Education program CIVITAS. In Latvia Education Development centre (EDC) ensures its implementation. While participating in the project, students gain knowledge and develop skills which are necessary for successful civic participation in the local community. The methodology of the project envisages that a students’ group under the guidance of a competent teacher choose a personally meaningful problem in the neighbourhood- school, town, city, local rural municipality, and study its causes, ways of expression, influence and possible solutions. They study different information sources, do surveys and interviews; students meet with the representatives of the local power, summarize and analyze the information. At the end of the project students offer their solution to the problem and activities of the civic partnership in the local community.

This academic year 12 schools from all regions of Latvia participated in the action project “Citizen”

During the closing event of the project on April 17 at Sigulda students will share the gained experience, will acquaint others with what they have achieved and the future intentions. The project results will be also displayed in the exhibition. Guests from the USA – the experts of the International civic education program CIVITAS as well as Latvian specialists on civic education will also take part in this event.
